The Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues, or the SPSSI, has more than 3,000 members. The members come from many different fields, but the majority of members are psychologists or allied scientists. Students and those who have an interest in the subject can also become members of the Society. Currently, the SPSSI has members in 61 countries around the world, and it is constantly working to change local and international policy pertaining to social issues. The SPSSI works towards improvements in the following using the study of human psychology: human rights, conservation, health, science, and much more.

Becoming a Member of the SPSSI

Choosing to become a member of the SPSSI is a great decision for many different types of psychologists. Because forensic psychologists have firsthand experience with the social issues in the area of crime and psychological issues, it makes sense to become a part of the organization.

You will receive a subscription to the Journal of Social Issues in print, as well as through the electronic journal, Analyses of Social Issues and Public Policy. Other journals and newsletters that you will receive include Social Issues and Policy Review and Forward. In addition, members are able to get discounts on SPSSI convention registration, a 25% discount on SPSSI books and other books published through Wiley. You also have access to the membership directory, information on grants and awards, and voting privileges, in most cases. The access to the membership directory can be very beneficial to those who want to network with colleagues and likeminded individuals.

The SPSSI has several different membership categories. For a full Member of the Society, the first year’s dues are $40 and are on a sliding scale afterwards. Most psychologists are going to be able to apply for the full member position. However, the SPSSI also offer memberships for graduate students, undergraduate students, sustaining members, lifetime members, and affiliates. You will be able to find a membership that is going to work for you.

Conference and Awards

The SPSSI has biennial conventions that are held in even numbered years during the summer. The conventions are a great place for professionals to gather and exchange ideas and to talk about the most important social issues of the day. During odd numbered years, the SPSSI holds business meetings that coincide with the APA convention. The SPSSI also offers paper awards and research grants. Some of the awards and grants include the Outstanding Teaching & Mentoring Award, the Kurt Lewin Award, the Clara Mayo Grants Program, and the Michele Alexander Early Career Award.
