The IACFP wants to “promote the psychological practice in criminal justice and law enforcement settings”, and it wants to be able to develop “effective treatment approaches for individuals in the care of the criminal justice system”. Research and education are huge components of the IACFP’s motives as well. If you are a forensic psychologist, then it’s advantageous to learn more about the IACFP and consider joining to enjoy its many benefits.
Why Should a Forensic Psychologist Join the IACFP?
When you are a member of the IACFP, you will receive a monthly subscription to its journal, Criminal Justice and Behavior. In addition, you will get the quarterly IACFP newsletter as well as many discounts on books and journals from a variety of publishers. Discounts on other forensic and correctional materials as well as conferences and events are other benefits of membership. Of course, one of the best things about becoming a member is access to the members-only part of its website. It’s possible to find job listings, information on other specialties and more. The networking opportunities through the IACFP are incredible for those who are in this field.
One of the interesting things about the IACFP is that not all of the members are psychologists, and not all of them work in forensics or in the mental health field. Most of the members do have advanced degrees in the behavioral sciences though. Some of them are working as researchers or teachers, and others may simply have an interest in the subject. It’s possible for those people to become associate members. Student memberships are available as well, which is great for those who are enrolled in graduate programs.
What’s the Cost of Joining the IACFP
The cost of a one-year membership is $75, and getting a two-year membership is only $125. With all of the benefits that it offers, it is a good deal for those who are in the field of forensic psychology. Having access to so many other professionals in the area of study, whether they are researchers or active professionals that are practicing, is always nice. The IACFP has a number of resources on their website that will be of interest to the forensic psychologist, and they even have an ethics hotline.
With the price of membership as low as it is, it makes sense for forensic psychologists to join the group. As with any membership program, it’s a good idea to read as much material as possible on the association and make sure that it’s going to be a good fit for your personal situation and needs.
