The Canadian Psychological Association, or the CPA, originated in 1939. In 1950, it was incorporated under the Canada Corporations Act, Part II. The goals of the CPA are to improve the health and welfare of the residents of Canada, and to promote the practice, education, and research of psychology. Similar to the American Psychological Association in the United States, the CPA is a membership organization. There are thousands of members of the group in Canada, and if you are a forensic psychologist working in the country, you will want to become a member.

Becoming a Member of the Canadian Psychological Association

When you become a member of the CPA, you will find that you have a number of different benefits. You will be able to receive the journals and magazines put out by the organization, and you will be able to attend the annual convention. The CPA hands out awards each year, and they do everything that they can to promote psychology in the country. They offer opportunities for continuing education and accreditation, and you will find other benefits such as home and auto insurance as well.

You will have several different options when you are choosing to become a member, and you can be from Canada or the United States. If you want to become a full member of the CPA, you will need to have your Master’s degree or your doctorate in psychology, or the academic equivalent. Retired membership is also possible, as is a student affiliate membership. To qualify for the student affiliate membership, you will have to be a graduate or undergraduate student living in Canada or the United States.

Special affiliate membership is possible for those who have an active interest in psychology as a profession or science, and for those who work or study in a related field. They will still have many benefits of the other types of membership, but they will not be able to be a part of the CPA’s governance. Other membership options include international student affiliate and honorary life fellow/honorary life member.

As you can see, there are a number of different options that you can choose when you are considering becoming a member of the CPA. With all of the benefits, it makes sense, especially if you are a professional in the field.

Forensic Psychologists Can Gain Much from Being a Member

Forensic psychologists will find that being a member of the CPA can be very beneficial. In addition to all of the other benefits that membership can offer, the ability to network with others in the field, and those who work in other specialties is nice. Having contacts with professionals that can help to give you insight is always a plus, and you can be sure that the best psychologists in the country are a part of the organization.

Consider all of the great reasons for joining and then start to learn more about the organization. The more you learn the easier it will be to see that this is a great choice for forensic psychologists.
