Joining the American Society of Criminology

The American Society of Criminology is an international group that studies criminology at all levels, from the scientific to the scholarly. Their goal is to understand, control, and prevent crime and delinquency. They have a multidisciplinary membership that can include people from all areas of the professional world as well as students. Joining the society is quite simple and it can offer some great benefits. The society has six different divisions that one can explore further. Those divisions include:

  • Division of Corrections and Sentencing
  • Division of Critical Criminology
  • Division of Experimental Criminology
  • Division of International Criminology
  • Division of People of Color and Crime
  • Division of Women and Crime

Each year, the society has an annual meeting, where the members will be able to gather so that they can discuss the many different subjects that are affecting criminology in the United States and around the world. The topics and themes of the annual meeting can vary. Some of the recent themes at the meetings include “The Causes and Consequences of Crime: Multi-Disciplinary Contributions”, and “Criminology, Justice, and the Public Policy in the Twenty-First Century”.

Those who choose to become a member of the American Society of Criminology will have access to a number of different journals and publications. You will receive Criminology, Criminology & Public Policy, and the Criminologist. The Criminologist is a newsletter published six times each year. In addition, the society gives out awards each year to those who are in the society as well as nonmembers. The awards recognize professional as well as academic accomplishments.

Unlike many organizations, there are no hard requirements for becoming a member of the American Society of Criminology. If you have an interest in the field, you will be able to join regardless of your discipline or specialty.
